CELEBRATING 100 DAY
Miss. Smyk's Grade 2 Class

We have been working with numbers since the start of the year.  To celebrate the 100th Day of School, the children were involved in a variety of activities.  The activities allowed them to expand their understanding of numbers as well as get a better sense and understanding of the number 100.

100 DAY STATIONARY COUNTING

The students were given a blank piece of 100 Day stationary.  On their personal piece of stationary, they were asked to write/draw 100 items.  This activity allowed the children to see how much 100 is.  Some children also chose to write the numbers from 1 to 100.  It expanded their understanding of 100 and gave them a better sense of how many days we had really been in school.

100 DAY COUNTING GRID

Each of the students were given a blank 100 chart/grid.  Firstly the children printed the letters of their name in the grid (one letter per square) as many times as they could in order to fill the chart.  They were then asked to see how many times that had printed their name in full and how many times they had partially printed their name.  Lastly, completed a class comparison.  The children compared with each other to see who had written their complete name the most times and who had written their complete name the least amount of times.  The children enjoyed working together to figure this out.

FILL IN THE MISSING NUMBER

The children were given a 100 chart.  The chart had some numbers filled in, but many of the numbers were missing.  They were asked to complete the chart by filling in the missing numbers up to 100.  When their personal chart was completed, they worked in small groups to compare and check if there were any patterns.  They looked for patterns such as you could count by 10's by looking at the last column and all the numbers under one column ended in 1's.  The children enjoyed looking for patterns in the numbers.  This activity also allowed them to expand their understanding of patterns.

100 ANIMALS

The children were given a page that was titled "100 Animals."  The students wrote about the fieldtrip that we had taken, to the Zoo, earlier in the week.  Some child wrote simple sentences while others listed all of the animals that they had seen.  The goal for the children was to try to identify 100 different animals.  They enjoyed comparing their lists when we had finished the activity.
